Elections held on campus for class presidents, officers By GREG PURCELL The Student Government As sociation lield elections Sept. 13 for the positions of Freshman Class President, Junior Class President, Adult Degree Program representative, and Senator at Large. Shannon Johnson was elected to the position of Senator at Large and Michael Ward took the posi tion of Freshman Class President. The Adult Degree Program rep resentative and Junior Class Presi dent remain open. Johnson said that she “was ex cited about being elected to the position.” She said she ran for the posi tion because she was “concerned with the spending that goes on with SGA.” Chris Brandt, President of SGA, said that election turnout was lower than last year. “In the fall, elections are harder to run,” Brandt said. SGA holds its meetings every other Monday at 10:30 a.m. in the SAC. The next meeting is Oct. 3. Those with any questions or concerns are encouraged to come and let them be known to the SGA. FELTON A 13-member committee along with the Academic Search Consultation Service has begun the effort to name a permanent replacement for former North Carolina Wesleyan College presi dent Dr. Leslie H. Gamer. The presidential search com mittee consists of members from the faculty, staff, student body, and Board of Trustees of North Carolina Wesleyan College. The Academic Search Consultation Service (ASCS) is a non-profit service based in Washington, D.C. Dr. Richard Watson, profes sor of history at Wesleyan and a member of the search committee, said that the main goal of the search is “to hire a successful president.” The committee would like to find a candidate that is “well rounded, possesses flexible, di verse skills, is committed to the liberal arts ideal, and can balance local community concerns with a global vision of educational pur pose,” Watson said. “Les Gamer has made the stan dard. After Dr. Garner, we know what is possible to have. This clarifies our standard in finding a replacement,” Watson added. The Academic Search Consul tation Service, which recently completed a presearch study of Wesleyan’s needs, is a national service that has completed over 350 searches since starting in 1976. ASCS employs nine con sultants, including Stanley F. Paulson who conducted the presearch study. Bmce T. Alton and Samuel R. Spencer, Jr., also consultants with ASCS, are expected to conduct the main search, which will be completed in about six months. According to the ASCS search proposal, the cost of the search will range from $51,900 to $46,900, including $31,000 in consultant’s fees. Stanley Paulson said that ASCS has “a history of success.” He also said his firm could facili tate the search process by “find ing candidates on a national ba sis, placing Wesleyan in contact with three to five candidates that could not be found by any other source. We also do extensive background checks on each po tential candidate.” SGA approves fall budget By PATRICK BRANNAN The North Carolina Wesleyan College Student Government As sociation unanimously passed the budget for the first semester at their first meeting Sept. 19. Campus Activities Board, CAB, received the largest amount of funding at $26,977.13 or 47.80 percent of the total semester bud get. CAB provides all funding for the activities and entertainers that come to campus. The Dissenter, the college yearbook, received the second largest amount of $7,795.37 or 13.81 percent of the semester bud get. The total cost for the year book is about $14,000 a year. SGA treasurer Phil Gray said the budget process went well. The finance committee, who makes all the decisions on the individual’ organization’s request, worked hard to hammer out a fair budget. The SGA contingency fund was budgeted at $2,965 for the semester. This amount includes funding for the Senior and Sopho more classes. The Senior class was budgeted $900 and the Sophomore class $50. That leaves about $1,900 in contingency for the semester. The contingency fund is used for funding organizations that pe tition during the semester and for funding any new organizations or any unforeseen costs. Gray said, “There is already a waiting list of four groups that are petitioning for money, a lim ited amount, and each semester there are organizations that form and ask for money.
